Master Readers
At Caroline Haslett, we have implemented Master Readers, a comprehensive approach that focusses on children's progression across key areas of reading. Through our whole-school reading strategy, we ensure children continue to thrive as they transition from phonics instruction. Master Reader lessons begin in Year 2, once phonics instruction is complete, and are delivered to all Key Stage 2 classes each morning from 9:00 to 9:30 am.
The key reading skills we focus on in Master Readers are:
- Vocabulary – expanding children’s understanding of words and their meanings
- Summarising – helping children condense information and identify key ideas
- Prediction – encouraging children to anticipate what will happen next based on clues in the text
- Questioning – developing critical thinking by prompting students to ask and answer questions about the text
- Comprehension – ensuring a deep understanding of the text, including its themes and nuances
