English (Writing)

At Caroline Haslett, we strive to ignite a passion for writing in all our children, helping them develop the skills needed to succeed in their education. Our writing curriculum engages children with a variety of stimuli, before focusing on vocabulary, sentence structure, and composition. Children write across a range of fiction and non-fiction styles, with connections made across the curriculum to deepen understanding and meaning.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced with clear progression, revisiting and building on essential skills each year. It runs parallel to our Master Readers, ensuring children see the connection between reading and writing. We teach children to write with purpose, and to read critically as writers, always having the impact of the reader in mind.

In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, we focus on building foundational skills, including handwriting, phonics, and sentence structure. By Key Stage 2, we expand on these skills, strengthening grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. By the end of Year 6, children will have a broad vocabulary and the writing skills needed for success in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
